Repair Procedure
Applicable Condition
Surface damage to DensGlass® Shaftliner panel that includes the gypsum core. Indentation less than 4 square inches and no more than 1/16" deep.
Type A: Minor Damage (≤1/16" deep, <4 sq in)
Step 1: Assess Damage
Identify the damaged area. Damage must be less than 4 square inches and no more than 1/16" deep.
Step 2: Fill with Joint Compound
Apply setting-type joint compound to fill the damaged indentation using a putty knife.
Step 3: Embed Fiberglass-Mesh Tape
While compound is wet, embed fiberglass-mesh drywall tape. Extend at least 2" beyond damage in all directions.
Step 4: Complete Repair
Allow compound to set. Apply additional coat if needed to fully embed mesh and create smooth surface.
Type B: Deeper Damage (>1/16" to ½" deep, <4 sq in)
Step 1: Assess Damage
Damage exceeding 1/16" but no more than ½" deep, and less than 4 sq in, requires compound, mesh, AND overlay panel.
Step 2: Fill with Joint Compound
Apply setting-type joint compound to fill the damaged indentation using a putty knife.
Step 3: Embed Fiberglass-Mesh Tape
While compound is wet, embed fiberglass-mesh tape. Extend at least 2" beyond damage in all directions.
Step 4: Apply Compound to Overlay Panel
Select overlay: 1" DensGlass® Shaftliner, 5/8" ToughRock® Fireguard, or 5/8" DensGlass® Sheathing. Cut to ≈26" wide (H-Stud to H-Stud), extending 4" beyond damage vertically. Apply compound to back with ¼" notched trowel.
Step 5: Install & Fasten Overlay Panel
Position overlay extending 4" beyond damage. Fasten to H-studs with Type S screws at 8" OC, 1" from edges. Attach horizontal edges with Type G screws 8" from each stud.
