Detailed Repair Procedure

Step 1: Identify Damage

Examine the panel surface carefully. Look for areas where the gold fiberglass-mat facer has separated and lifted from the cream-colored gypsum core beneath. The torn facer may curl or lift at the edges. Mark the damaged area boundaries before proceeding.

Step 2: Assess Core Condition

Confirm the gypsum core (cream-colored layer) is intact and has not been damaged or lost. Gently lift the torn facer to fully expose the core underneath. This repair procedure is only suitable when the core remains undamaged. If the core is crumbled, broken, or missing, a different repair method is required.

Step 3: Apply Joint Compound

Using a taping knife (6" or wider), apply setting-type joint compound to skim coat the exposed gypsum core area. Ensure complete coverage of the exposed core with an even layer of compound. The compound should extend slightly beyond the damaged area to ensure proper adhesion when the facer is embedded.

Step 4: Embed Fiberglass Mat

Press the loose fiberglass-mat facer firmly into the wet joint compound, ensuring complete adhesion. Use the taping knife to smooth the facer flat, working from the center outward to remove air pockets. The mat should lay flat and fully cover the repaired area. Allow to dry completely before finishing.
